The festival is one in a long line of potential flame-related festivals scheduled by International Fire Fest. The only issue is most of the others seem to have never actually been held. Events in Camden, Penrith, Ballarat, Bendigo and more, were all cancelled after being postponed at least once.
The Wollongong Fire Festival (WFF) was originally supposed to take place on September 14, 2024 (remember this date), but two delays due to the weather mean it is now on October 12 . The Facebook page for the event promises vibrant fire performances, an intense fire show and a musical delight to close the night. Take the Camden Flame Festival, which was supposed to happen on July 21, 2024, before being postponed to September 14, 2024, the original date for the Wollongong Fire Festival.
It is unclear how the two festivals hosted by the International Fire Festival could both occur on the same day. Ticket holders were emailed revealing the Camden Flame Fest had been cancelled on September 11, only three days before the event was supposed to go ahead leaving customers to take to Facebook to ask for refunds for the event. Those questions are still being asked.
Applications left unfilled A spokesperson for the Camden Council told the Mercury the organisers had sent an application for the event to them. "However, after several follow-ups, we did not receive the necessary documents from the event organiser to allow the application to be considered and approved," they said. Another event, the Penrith Flame Fest, again run by International Fire Fest, began the application process for hosting at the Penrith Paceway but was cancelled due to low interest before organisers paid a deposit.
As of Wednesday, October 9, the Wollongong City Council had yet to confirm the WFF application. A spokesperson for the council said, "Council is in receipt of an event application for the Wollongong Fire Festival". "We are currently working towards issuing an Event Licence for the event.
" Event organisers have said the WFF is going ahead and they have processed refunds for any cancelled events. The Mercury has spoken to some of the advertised vendors who are of the belief the event is indeed going ahead on Saturday at 5pm. Reporter at the Illawarra Mercury, covering the local community.
