The dates for the 2025 edition of Comic Con Africa have changed.Organisers confirmed that the event has moved forward a month to accommodate another event at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.Next year’s edition will stick with the usual dates for Comic Con Africa.

Comic Con Africa (CCA) is no longer taking place in September this year. The annual event, which has been on the go in South Africa since 2018 is still taking place, but organisers have confirmed that it is moving forward a month. As such, Comic Con Africa 2025 is happening from 28th to 31st August.

The reason for the change is to accommodate another event in September taking place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec).“This change is unavoidable, due to a major international event taking place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre which will be announced in the media shortly. The venue will be undertaking extensive renovations, and so the Comic Con Africa team has had no choice but to bring the festival forward to protect the interests of its fans and the event,” organisers explained in a release to Hypertext.

Tickets for the event, sold online via Howler from R170, reflect the change of dates, with the official website for CCA doing the same.As for what event has forced CCA to change its dates, it remains to be seen, but given that this longstanding event has had to shift, we cannot help feel like it is governmental in nature. South Africa is due to host the G20 summit later this year, but that is only in November.

With an announcement said to be forthcoming, it will be interesting to see what other event got top billing over CCA.“Whilst we are disappointed that we must change the dates of our 2025 festival, the Johannesburg Expo Centre is the perfect home for Comic Con Africa and so changing the venue was not an option. A festival of Comic Con Africa’s complexity requires a large venue with multi-usage spaces that can accommodate all of the many aspects of the festival.

And of course, when you have over 70,000 people in attendance, the size of the venue is of key importance. The Johannesburg Expo Centre has the capacity and the space we need to accommodate our high volume of fans,” added Carla Massmann, CCA’s show director.Should you have any questions regarding the change, organisers welcome you to email them at info[at]comicconafrica[dot]co[dot]za.
