FOXBOROUGH, Mass - It was clear after Drake Maye suffered a hard hit to the head in the first half, that he wanted to stay out and keep playing. He even tried to, ultimately finishing the team's drive, which resulted in a punt soon after. And then he headed straight into the blue medical tent for further evaluation.
As the minutes went by to end the half, it became more and more obvious that Maye had suffered a concussion. It was all but confirmed when he walked into the locker room and didn't come back out. But according to head coach Jerod Mayo, the quarterback tried his best to go back in.
"I walked in at halftime and saw him. The competitor that he is, obviously he wanted to go back out there and play," Mayo told reporters after the win. "But there’s a protocol that he has to go through.
"Again, can’t wait to get him back." He's a true competitor and didn't want to let his team down. But his health should and will always come first.
Because of the injury, the team had to turn to Jacoby Brissett once again. And the quarterback took a moment after the game to send his best wishes to Drake. "Obviosuly you never want to see a player go down," he said.
"Obviously hoping Drake (Maye) gets back." The play that resulted in Maye's injury was very controversial. It appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet collision, but the officials did not throw a flag.
"They didn't call it. I had conversations with them the entire game," Mayo said. "I thought some of those calls were questionable.
At the same time, I have to go back and watch the film. We'll have those conversations." This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission.
