The Chinese motor industry is continuing to grow, with the country's automotive brands producing 31.3 million passenger cars in 2024 alone - around 100,000 of which were bought by Brits. One of the main reasons why Chinese models are continuing to gain a foothold on the UK market is due to their affordability, often significantly undercutting more traditional choices on the market.
This is certainly the case for the OMODA 9 - a large luxury SUV made by Chery, who also manufactures the Range Rover-like JAECOO 7 that went on sale in the UK earlier in 2025. A sleek SUV featuring particularly bold styling, the OMODA 9 aims to take on buyers of high-end models such as the Lexus RX . However, with a price of £44,990, the OMODA comfortably undercuts the cost of the Lexus by around £8,500.
As a result, the 9 will also compete against high-end versions of family SUVs, including the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson. The OMODA 9's styling is particularly distinctive. The front end features a patterned grille neatly blended into the bumper and a large set of vertical LED daytime running lights that mask the edge of the side air vents.
Towards the rear, the 9 follows the growing trend of featuring a light bar that spans across the tailgate and a carefully sculpted rear bumper; however, the F1-style vertical third brake light gives it a unique touch. Without trim levels, the only styling option buyers can choose from is the colour their OMODA comes in, with the vast majority featuring two-tone paintwork. Inside, the OMODA 9 offers a particularly contemporary design, featuring a large centre console with a pair of storage cubbies and three rotary controls for functions such as the air conditioning.
All models sold in the UK will come equipped with heated, cooled and reclining seats in the front and rear, air purification, a 14-speaker audio setup, and no fewer than 20 different ADAS systems for driver assistance. OMODA also claims that the 9's interior is also exceptionally quiet, with the laminated glass and tyre choice giving it around the same level of noise as a modern library. Like the high-end SHS version of the Jaecoo 7, the OMODA 9 will use a Super Hybrid System powertrain, which links a 1.
6 petrol engine with a 34.46kWh battery pack. With the SHS powertrain fitted, the OMODA 9 is able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.
9 seconds and return up to 166mpg - thanks in part to the ability to cover up to 93 miles using only the battery. The OMODA 9 will be available to order from June 2025, with the company hoping to expand its dealership network across the UK to 100 by the end of the year..
