Photo by Spencer Colby / The Canadian Press Article content It’s too bad the Redblacks finished third rather than first in the East Division standings. Home-field advantage in the playoffs could have very well carried them all the way to Vancouver for the Grey Cup Game. As it is, to qualify for a spot in the championship game on Nov.
17 they’ll have to do some serious trend altering. In Friday’s regular-season finale at TD Place Stadium, a.meaningless game standings-wise, the Redblacks kept No.

That’s a nice change for the Ottawa fans who have paid to watch them deliver inept performance after inept performance the previous four seasons on Bank St. with records of 3-6 (last year), 0-9 (2022) 1-6 (2021) and 1-8 (2019). Conversely, only the Calgary Stampeders, who were 0-8-0 on the road, had a worse record as visitors than the 2-7-0 posted by the Redblacks.
Bad news for the Redblacks is that next week they have to find a way to win at BMO Field, where the Argos had the second best home record at 7-2. WHAT A FINISH Kalil (The Thrill) Pimpleton showed one and all why he is the Redblacks nominee for rookie of the year with an outstanding night on Friday. He had six catches for 167 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown with under two minutes left.
Brown’s night wasn’t so bad either. All he did was complete 26 of 38 passes for 455 yards and three touchdowns, while throwing one interception. Advertisement 3 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
Article content The game and regular season ended in dramatic, exciting fashion. with the Redblacks defence keeping the Ticats out of the endzone with three chances from the one. The ball was snapped for the last play with just one second on the clock.
THROUGH FIFTEEN The Redblacks had a 7-3 lead after one quarter thanks to a Brown 12-yard scoring pass to Bralon Addison that culminated a seven-play 64-yard drive. AFTER THIRTY Lewis Ward hit on field goals of 23 and 31 yards in the second quarter, while the Tiger-Cats visited the end zone on a Bo Levi Mitchell 12-yard toss to a Tim White that couldn’t have been more open. Deandre Lamonte was the closest Redblack to White, and he was about four strides away.
The Hamilton touchdown march started after Brown overthrew Jaelon Acklin, right into the arms of Destin Talbert, near the visitors 30-yard line. Brown would make up for that gaffe later in the quarter by directing another scoring drive, this one consisting of five plays for 63 yards, ending in a four-yard touchdown pass to Acklin. Along with the two touchdown passes and pick, Brown headed into the intermission with 233 throwing yards.
Pimpleton had 71 of those yards, mostly because of a reception over the middle that covered 51. The second biggest Redblacks play in the first half came from an unexpected source. Dustin Crum entered the game in a two-quarterback formation and took a handoff through a hole and 42 yards into Hamilton territory.
Damon Webb had an interception and Lorenzo Mauldin a sack for the Redblacks in the first half, which ended with Ottawa up 20-13.
