Chennai: The Head and Neck Centre & Hospital has organised south India's first workshop on treating facial paralysis through surgery. The two-day event, which started on Saturday, brings together surgeons from across India, including plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ENT specialists, and head and neck surgeons. The workshop will cover new techniques for facial nerve surgery , with lectures, video demonstrations, and hands-on training.

Facial paralysis can happen due to nerve damage. Director of THANC hospital Dr S Vidhyadharan said the workshop focuses on surgical treatment of facial paralysis to improve smile and facial expressions. Facial paralysis, caused by nerve damage from conditions such as stroke, trauma, or Bell's palsy, can impair facial movement and expressions.

When it does not resolve naturally, surgery becomes necessary, he added. Italian surgeons Prof. Federico Biglioli and Dr Federico Bolognesi will share their techniques and insights with the participants during the event.
