After finishing last season with an 11-2 record that ended in a Cotton Bowl loss to Ohio State, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian wants his program to add tons of depth in the transfer portal. With quarterback Quinn Ewers projected to be off to the NFL and a few key injuries affecting position groups heading into the 2025 season, Sarkisian made it clear during Tuesday's media availability that Texas isn't remaining stagnant when it comes to improving its program. "We really try to identify the portal to where we think there's a need, but yet also is the person we’re bringing in an upgrade to maybe what we have, or can it supplement what we have at certain positions?" he said.
"Naturally, there's a couple positions depth-wise where we’re not where we need to be right now. So we'll look at the portal that way." Texas is thin at receiver, with only DeAndre Moore Jr.
and Ryan Wingo as WRs, who had at least 400 yards last season. It's a similar story at tight end, which currently consists of two sophomores, two redshirt freshmen, and one true freshman. Ewers is slated to be selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and CBS Sports' mock drafts suggest the Los Angeles Rams as a potential landing spot.
Los Angeles holds eight picks on draft night, starting with No. 26 in round one, and including four in the sixth round. The Rams are expected to address needs at cornerback, linebacker, and offensive tackle before addressing a future successor to nearly two-decade NFL starter Matthew Stafford, who joined the Rams in 2021 .
LA's depth chart features Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett, with neither veteran QB attempting more than 30 passes last season. Ewers started for the Longhorns for three seasons after transferring from Ohio State, helping lead the program to two College Football Playoff appearances in 2023 and last season. He has reportedly met with several NFL teams, including the Miami Dolphins , New Orleans Saints , New York Jets , and Las Vegas Raiders .
Ewers skipped speaking to the media after his controversial Pro Day in March for a private meeting with the Dolphins. Several scouts criticized the former Texas QB for some inaccuracies shown during deep throws during the workout. The reins appear set to fall into the hands of second-year quarterback Arch Manning , though senior Joe Tatum is still on the roster, along with redshirt freshman Trey Owens and incoming freshman KJ Lacey.
Despite the roster questions, expectations remain sky high in Austin after seeing the talent of Manning over three games last season..
