Tesla advises drivers to get familiar with the manual drive mode controls before relying fully on Auto Shift. Tesla ’s popular electric SUV – the Model Y – has just received its first major update since its facelift. After launching globally on 10 January 2025 and starting deliveries in China from 26 February, the new version is already turning heads.
Tesla clocked 50,000 bookings on the day of its debut, and over 30,000 units were sold in February alone in China, as per Financial Express. Now, the American EV company has released its first software update for the refreshed Model Y. The new update, version 2025.
8.6, introduces a Beta version of the upgraded Auto Shift feature. This update has also been made available for other Tesla models like the Model 3, Model S, and Model X.
While earlier versions of Auto Shift could only move the car out of ‘Park’, the latest version goes a step further. It can now help with three-point turns, making everyday driving smoother. Tesla even posted a short video on its official X (formerly Twitter) account earlier in March, showing how the feature works.
With the 2025.8.6 update, the enhanced Auto Shift (Beta) system now helps drivers automatically switch between Park (P), Drive (D), and Reverse (R) depending on what’s around the car.
This reduces the need to tap the screen during parking or while doing multi-point turns. To turn on this feature, drivers can follow these steps: Go to vehicle settings Select pedals & steering Choose auto shift (Beta) and switch it on. However, Tesla reminds users to always check that the gear selected matches where they actually want to go before hitting the accelerator.
If Auto Shift doesn’t engage properly, you can still manually choose gears using the touchscreen’s drive mode strip..
