“Owning a team in the PBA would yet be another milestone for the city and people of Zamboanga. Big things are coming for Zamboanga basketball,” Valientes team owner Junnie Navarro said in a press release. If the sale pushes through, the Valientes are expected to debut in the PBA for its 50th season.

The team, led by Navarro, his mother Cory Navarro of Kings Asia Pacific, and Trevor Crewe of Crewsharp, met with PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and Terrafirma team governor Bobby Rosales at the league office in Libis. Zamboanga has competed internationally as it became the inaugural champion of The Asian Tournament with four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins and represented the country in the Dubai International Basketball Championship. It also saw action in the now-defunct ASEAN Basketball League, with two-time NBA champion Mario Chalmers serving as the Valientes’ import.

“Zamboanga Valientes [have] a proven competitive track record both in the Philippines and the international basketball scene. Owning a franchise in the PBA is the next step towards our goal of showcasing Zamboangueño talent on the big stage,” said Cory Navarro.Aside from the Valientes, Family’s Brand Sardines has also shown interest in acquiring the Terrafirma franchise.
