Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo has reminded newly-graduated lawyers that as they step out into the public domain, they must stand up to the challenges of the law. Justice Temo told a recent swearing-in ceremony of new legal practitioners in Suva that being a lawyer was both enjoyable and challenging. “But stand up to the challenges,” Justice Temo said.
“As you go out to serve the public, please do your job courageously, honestly, and with determination.” Justice Temo reminded the new lawyers that all the skills they had gained at school would be put to the test. “Work hard.
“We expect you to fight for your clients. “If you are a prosecutor, we expect you to fight for the State. “As a prosecutor, you’re fighting for victims of crime.
We expect you to fight, fight, fight and fight.” The Acting CJ said the new lawyers were not ambassadors of the legal profession, but their reputation as legal professionals was in their hands. “The effort that you put in at university is only the beginning and your degree is a key for you to open that door that you are now opening.
“The counsels sitting in front of you have journeyed through that door. It is called the practical side of the law. “At university, you learned the theory of law.
Now, you have to go through its practical side.”.
