1 2 3 Pune: A techie lost Rs1.6 crore after he met a woman on a dating app in Feb 2024 and got carried away into investing in shares after she assured him of good returns so that they could put together the money and buy a flat after getting married. The woman claimed to be an executive at a prominent brokerage firm.
The 45-year-old IT engineer of Pimple Saudagar realised he was being duped when the woman continued to demand money. He approached the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police on Saturday and lodged a complaint. Senior inspector Anil Devade of the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police told TOI that the complainant works with a private company in Pimpri Chinchwad.
"In Feb, last year, he met the woman on a dating app. She told the victim she worked at a prominent brokerage firm. After a few chats and calls, the woman proposed marriage," Devade said.
The officer said the engineer told the police the woman was a glib talker and convinced him that they should have their own flat in the near future. She told the man he could earn money by investing in shares through her firm. "The techie accepted immediately since it was his future wife assuring him of a good profit on stock investments," he said.
The woman added the techie to a WhatsApp group of investors and told him to download an app to make investments. "The engineer transferred Rs1.6 crore to different bank accounts between Feb and Nov, last year, and lost it," the officer said.
Devade said the police have registered a case under sections 316 (criminal breach of trust) and 318 (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of IT Act. "We have sought details of the transactions from the complainant's bank. Investigations are on," he added.
