Techie (38) loses 42.3L to online fraudsters

Pune: A woman from Dhanori fell victim to an online stock trading scam , losing Rs42.3 lakh after fraudsters promised her an extraordinary 450% return on her investment. She lodged a complaint with the Vishrantwadi police on Saturday, reporting that the fraud occurred from January 7 to 31 this year.

According to the police, the techie's phone number was added to a group on a messaging application where the fraudsters discussed high returns on the tips shared by the group admin. Police said the techie read all the messages about profits generated by trading shares online and was tempted to invest in the shares. Police said, "Following this, the victim contacted the group, and the group admin promised to help her out.



He promised 450 percent returns. The group admin asked her to download an online application to trade shares and sent her a link to the application. The techie downloaded the application and started trading shares, but she invested in stocks that had very nominal prices.

" "A few days later, the techie received a message from the group admin asking her to invest in high-value stocks for more profit. The fraudsters promised to help her out by buying the high-value shares. The fraudsters then shared details of five bank accounts with her and asked her to transfer money to these accounts.

They also shared a few phone numbers with her and asked her to transfer money to the linked UPI application. When the woman decided to sell her earned shares, she couldn't. It was then that the victim realised she was cheated," police said.
