A British crooner has left fans utterly flabbergasted with their latest transformation showcased on social media. Famous for a distinctive look that would usually make them stand out in a crowd, this performer could now blend in unnoticed amongst street passersby. Taking to their Instagram , one of Taylor Swift's closest friends shared a throwback to their teen years akin to what would have been their MySpace profile picture.
Shaking off their well-known style, the musician flaunted a goth-inspired black hairstyle complete with an early 2000s swooping fringe and even sported a lip ring. Ed Sheeran's fresh aesthetic isn't here to stay though, as it's just a clever stunt to hype up his new single, "Azizam"—and it seems to be hitting all the right notes with his audience. Known for his unruly ginger mane and casual ensembles typically featuring cargo pants and simple tees, Sheeran underwent quite the metamorphosis.
For his latest guise, Sheeran covered his newly dyed hair under a beanie, paired with an outsized black hoodie and tee—though he couldn't resist incorporating cargo pants into the mix, choosing a dark pair this time around. The singer hinted, however, that the faux lip ring was more than just a temporary prop suggesting he might keep the edgy addition. "Fake lip piercing but might just do it, yolo," the star teased on Instagram.
Accompanying the post, Sheeran wrote: "Azizam promo week selfie dump, choose your fighter," and presented a medley of snapshots from the previous week. One fan urged on Ed's post, "Get a lip piercing stud for the fun of it pls," They weren't alone in their admiration for Ed's new look. Another chimed in: "Emo Ed is literally my favourite Ed, please make this become a real thing for at least one music video.
" A third fan added: "Emo Sheeran wasn't on my bingo card today but slay. "We need emo music to make a comeback," another follower wrote. Ed's transformation came after he surprised Londoners with an impromptu performance outside Kings Cross station last Friday.
Promoting his new single, the singer looked far from his emo persona, sporting a bright pink T-shirt as he performed in front of a pink heart emblazoned with the word Azizam. He delighted surprised spectators by performing some of his biggest hits including Shape Of You, Bad Habits and Perfect. But that wasn't all he had up his sleeve for fans.
Over in America, Ed underwent another transformation as he performed on a bustling New York subway platform. A video shared on microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, quickly gained traction, showing Ed incognito in a black hoodie, large sunglasses, and a wig that completely concealed his famous red hair. His "emo" look was completed with black cargo pants and a grey beanie.
Despite his incognito look, his unique voice and undeniable talent were unmistakable, attracting a crowd who joyfully sang along to his acoustic rendition of Chappell Roan's smash hit Pink Pony Club. One fan even posted: "Ed Sheeran disguised as an emo boy singing Chappell Roan in the subway, they really did this for me." After revealing his true identity, Ed left fans in awe with many quickly realizing that he was promoting his new single.
A fan account tweeted: "Azizam in the NYC subway! ! ! New Ed Sheeran album imminent, he's popping up in random places again. Azizam marks Ed's first single since the release of his 2024 track, Under the Tree, which failed to reach the dizzying heights of his previous success." The song debuted at Number 55 on the Official UK charts, a stark contrast to his previous hits which include an impressive 10 Official UK Number One tracks.
