The Bodyguard, a classic romance drama film from 1992, is officially being remade. Sam Wrench, renowned for directing live music documentaries such as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, and Billie Eilish: Live At The O2, will direct this project, according to Warner Bros.

Studio. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairmen and CEOs of Warner Bros. Pictures, first informed Deadline of the development.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screenplay for the adaptation will be written by Jonathan Abrams, who wrote the narrative for Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2. Cast information and other details have not been made public yet.

The Bodyguard, originally directed by Mick Jackson, centers on actress-musician Whitney Houston’s character Rachel Marron, whose management approaches former Secret Service bodyguard Frank Farmer, played by Kevin Costner, since she is constantly annoyed by a stalker. When Rachel and Frank start to feel something for one another, their relationship transcends their professional boundaries. Rachel sings a cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You at the film’s heartbreaking conclusion.

Off-screen, the song became one of Houston’s most well-known vocal performances, reaching the top of charts all over the world and continuing to be a timeless musical classic. In addition, the tracks I Have Nothing and Run to You garnered nominations for the Oscar for Best Original Song. The movie also starred Tomas Arana, Ralph Waite, Bill Cobbs, Gary Kemp, and Michele Lamar Richards.

Whitney Houston also made her film debut in The Bodyguard. The original film was written by Lawrence Kasdan, who is most recognised for his work on the Star Wars saga. The music for The Bodyguard was composed by Alan Silvestri, the creative genius behind the Avengers theme and the soundtracks to Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, and The Polar Express, among other films.

At the box office, the original movie made $411 million worldwide. Sam Wrench’s efforts paid off, as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which debuted on Disney+ in March 2024, became the most-watched music video ever. The documentary on the pop star’s latest tour includes four additional main show songs that were not seen in cinemas.
