The Kolkata International Film Festival 2024 paid a heartfelt centenary tribute to legendary filmmaker Tapan Sinha , whose profound storytelling and cinematic vision has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Four of his masterpieces – Kabuliwala , Nirjan Saikate , Harmonium , and Galpo Holeo Satti – were showcased to packed houses. Galpo Holeo Satti , a timeless gem, was chosen as the inaugural film of the festival.
Adding to the tribute, a special screening of Banchharamer Bagan celebrated not only Sinha’s cinematic brilliance but also honoured playwright and actor Manoj Mitra, whose portrayal of Banchharam remains iconic in Bengali theatre and cinema. Audiences flocked to the screenings at Nandan and other festival venues, drawn by Sinha’s ability to weave universal human emotions into compelling narratives. The response was overwhelming, with many applauding his works as benchmarks of Bengali cinema .
The festival atmosphere turned nostalgic as viewers reflected on classics like Kabuliwala , with its poignant portrayal of human connections, and Harmonium , which showcased Sinha’s nuanced understanding of everyday life. Nirjan Saikate and its evocative storytelling further underscored his mastery of the medium.
