Gervonta Davis ‘ boxing resume has come under fire as we examine his boxing record. Davis is currently undefeated with a 30-0 record, which includes 28 knockouts. That has made him one of the best P4P fighters in the world.
However, he often faces criticism for not facing the best fighters. In order to determine his current legacy, we must look at his best wins to see if there are any asterisks over them. Davis’ biggest win in his career so far has been a seventh-round knockout of Ryan Garcia .
He dropped Ryan with a body shot in a fight that sold over 1.2 million PPVs. Davis’ Resume After the fight, Davis described himself as the face of boxing.
He felt that victory solidified his position as one of the best fighters. However, Garcia later revealed that the 136-pound catchweight and ten-pound rehydration clause had severely drained him. It was no surprise then that Garcia moved up to 140 pounds for his next fight.
He faced Oscar Duarte and knocked him out as he looked back to his best. Garcia also revealed that he had suffered an injury in camp, which was allegedly leaked to Davis’ team. A similar argument could be made against Davis when it comes to his victory against Mario Barrios .
Davis moved up to 140 pounds and knocked out Barrios in another impressive win. However, Barrios later revealed that Davis had imposed a rehydration clause on him. There is a feeling that Davis imposes such clauses to prevent fighters from utilizing their natural assets if they are bigger than him.
Davis has also been accused of making fighters move up from weight classes. This came to the fore when he faced the former WBA 130-pound champion, Hector Garcia . Garcia did well in the fight, landing on Davis as he remained competitive.
However, during the second half of the fight, Davis started to pull away as his shots did the damage. He eventually stopped Garcia in the ninth round to secure another knockout. However, since Garcia was moving up from 130, he was always up against it.
The same argument can be said for Davis’ victory against Leo Santa Cruz . Santa Cruz was moving up from 126 pounds when he faced Davis at 130. While Santa Cruz is a four-weight world champion, the jump up in weight was simply too much, as Davis knocked him out in the sixth round.
Davis’ Competition Davis’ tendency to avoid the big names has also come under question. He has not had fights with Devin Haney , Shakur Stevenson , Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez , who are all considered top competition in and around his weight class. While he has been linked with those fights throughout his years, there is a feeling that Davis is waiting to fight them when they are declining.
Davis is expected to face Lamont Roach Jr . in his next fight. That has not gone down very well, as Paulie Malignaggi slammed Davis’ record.
“There’s no standard here. There are different standards for different fighters. We need to do it all together to force the best fights possible.
He wanted the Lomachenko fight when Lomachenko was old. He didn’t want the Lomachenko fight when he was in his prime. It was only after Loma turned 37 that he suddenly began showing interest in fighting him.
If Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson were like Lomachenko, this fight would happen. I think Gervonta Davis doesn’t want to fight him,” Malignaggi said This article first appeared on BoxingNews.com and was syndicated with permission.
