CHENNAI: Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan said Union govt's 'one nation, one election' proposal was "dangerous and flawed". After chairing his party's general council on Saturday, the actor-turned-politician said India does not need it now and in the future too. He cited similar experiments in some countries that he said had led to "scars that exist even now".

The council unanimously re-elected him as president of the party. Kamal was of the view that simultaneous polls in 2014 would have led to a sweeping victory and resulted in dictatorship and loss of freedom of speech. He said people must realise that they have escaped from such a condition.

"We have escaped from a disease more virulent than coronavirus," he said. Referring to himself as a failed politician, he said failure in the political sphere is not a 'permanent position' and the Prime Minister's post is also not a 'permanent position'. Chief minister M K Stalin congratulated Kamal Haasan for being re-elected unanimously as the president of his party MNM in the second general council which convened on Saturday.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Stalin said, "Congratulations to my dear friend @ikamalhaasan who thinks rationally and works for social justice on his re-election as party leader @maiamofficial. All the best in his political journey.".
