Chennai: Tambaram Corporation plans to build more animal birth control centres to tackle the growing population of stray dogs in the southern suburb. The announcement made by commissioner S Balachander triggered a debate during the council meet on Friday, as most councillors felt the expansion of centres would be ineffective without hiring more doctors. As of now, one doctor serves all 70 wards.

There are ten workers and two pick-up vehicles for dogs. Every month, an average of 12 dogs undergo sterilisation surgeries in Tambaram against the target of at least 30. “Workers from existing animal birth control centres in Anakaputhur, Bharathipuram and Gundumedu do not come to catch stray dogs for sterilisation regularly.

They come only after we file complaints,” said councillor Indiran S (DMK) from Irumbuliyur’s ward 62. Corporation commissioner S Balachander said the civic agency did not have enough workers. “We need a team of at least five people for each zone to conduct inspections and raids.

We need more vehicles to transport the dogs safely. We have floated tenders and will buy vehicles soon,” he said. Recently, residents had complained to councillors regarding water taxes charged by the corporation.

“Many residents have complained about incorrect assessment of water tax. The corporation has randomly increased sqft figures. Residents who do not have water connections are being asked to pay.

They are forced to pay when they seek clarification,” said Chitapakkam (ward 44) councillor Jagan C (DMK). Corporation officials agreed there is confusion. “We had demand notices.

There might have been errors. We also want to reassess zonal rates for better tax assessment,” he said. The corporation will form a team to coordinate with residents to address grievances related to water taxes in the coming weeks.

Vacancies remain unaddressed too. New Colony (ward 28) councillor Vijayalakshmi G (independent) questioned why the corporation is resorting to outsourcing workers when assistant engineers and executive engineers are already employed by the corporation. “Each zone has at least 10 vacancies.

We must outsource workers to fill this gap,” Vasanthakumari K said. The corporation hopes to fill vacancies by this year.
