Talented young artists find themselves in the frame

The work of talented young artists was showcased in the annual Westhoughton Primary School Art competition.

The work of talented young artists was showcased in the annual Westhoughton Primary School Art competition. Their work was exhibited at Westhoughton Library with the competition organised by the local rotary club. President of Westhoughton Rotary Club John Oakes said:“Once again we challenged young local artists to show us their talents.

" He welcomed an audience of prize winners and their families and say: "How much Westhoughton Rotary Club enjoyed meeting them and celebrating their talent. “We’re delighted that each year so many local schools value the chance for their children to display their work and even win a prize and we thank their staff for their continuing support for this competition.” Mr Oakes welcomed Westhoughton Mayor Cllr Neil Maher saying how much we all appreciated the town mayor’s interest and support in coming to present the prizes.



The mayor said how much he admired the work of the young people and congratulated the club on the continuing success of this annual competition for Year Three and Year Five pupils now in its 17th year. ” he said, “makes it possible for the club to run community events such as the Art Competition.” He added his thanks to all the parents for their interest as well as the teachers and teaching assistants who work so hard to encourage their pupils. The mayor presented individual winners with cash prizes and certificates of achievement.

The top three winners from each year group received a cash prize and the two first prize winning schools each received a cheque for £100 to spend on art materials to develop future talent. The Year Three first prize went to Chin Yui Anmee Kwok for a painting of her favourite game, and won the Westhoughton Rotary Diamond Jubilee Trophy for her school, Sacred Heart RC Primary. The Year Five Bernard Ramsden Art Competition trophy went to St Bartholomew CE Primary thanks to their first prize winner Olivia Williams and her painting of a Wintry scene.

The two school were presented with their trophies, which they will each hold for a year, as well as their cheques for £100. In closing the event, Mr Oakes thanked the library for making the exhibition possible. He said: “Everyone gets a warm welcome.
