Occasionally in the archive we come across photos of the former Wilkinson’s Sanatorium in Bolton which always seem to be of interest to Looking Back readers. Wilkinson's Sanatorium, Bolton, 1964 (Picture: Newsquest) This photo is from June 1964 and shows possibly three patients walking through the grounds of the large property off Belmont Road at Astley Bridge. Behind them you can see two of the huts which were dotted around the grounds.

These were to allow patients to take in the air and also to entertain visitors during warmer weather. You can just see that the nearest hut is on wheels which allowed it to be turned to catch the sun. The isolation hospital opened in 1908 to treat patients with TB.
