A special NIA court on Friday sent Tahawwur Rana to 18-day custody of the National Investigation Agency following his extradition from the United States.Rana, accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, arrived in Delhi around 6.30 pm on a special flight.
He was arrested by the agency upon arrival.His extradition follows a prolonged legal process in the United States and is part of India’s investigation into the 26/11 attacks, in which 166 people were killed.Soon after his arrival at Palam Technical Airport, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) confirmed his arrest.
“The NIA investigation team at the airport arrested Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin living primarily in Chicago (US), soon after he emerged from the airplane, after completing all the necessary legal formalities,” a statement by the probe agency said.Thereafter, Rana was produced before a special NIA judge at the Patiala House court in Delhi late Thursday night. The NIA sought 20-day custody of Rana, citing clinching evidence including emails.
