Aiming to defend their title as winners of the women’s category in the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival for three years in a row has been the key aim of the Tagimoucia Ranadi team this week. The team thrashed the Ucunivatu Women’s Rugby side 41-0 yesterday in their final pool match at the Wairiki Parish Grounds in Taveuni. Team manager Ana Rabuka voiced the team’s goals and what the tournament meant to them as well.
“We’ve been the defending champions for the last two Waikiki sevens, and we’re coming here to try and make history so that we can have three wins in a row,” Rabuka stated. Desiring to achieve that aim is not an easy feat for the team, as Rabuka said women’s teams such as theirs were not easy to find let alone have, but she said it motivated her side to do their best. “In every team, especially women’s clubs, we always find it hard when to get our girls together, but in tournaments like this, we always make sure that we bring out the best with us,” she said.
“So I have faith in my girls that I have here on the island, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve tomorrow (Saturday).” Such an approach has proven timely as a few players from the team have taken part in international competitions by wearing the white national jumper. “And if you’ve been watching, they’ve got a few of their girls in the current national team, and also the ocean year that they’ve just been played on in Solomon’s last weekend,” she said.
