Filipina grapplers Sydney Sy-Tancontian and Jeniva Consigna made their maiden appearances in the World Beach Sambo Championship memorable by winning a bronze medal each over the weekend in Casablanca, Morocco. Sy-Tancontian, 24, captured the bronze in the women’s +72kg class after beating Guinea’s Ramatoulaye Sylla in the quarterfinal but succumbed to Romania’s Katsiaryna Kaliuzhnaya in the semifinal. Consigna, 21, lost to Romanian Volha Maleika in the semis of the women’s 72kg class.

She advanced to the medal round with an impressive win over Kazakh Dauletzhan Nazereke in the quarters. The World and Asia/Oceania medalist shared the third honor with FIAS3’s Lauryn Lage. In the finasl, Kaliuzhnaya settled for silver as she was humbled by independent fighter Olesya Tkachenko.
