More News for Switch 2Nintendo is introducing a new type of physical game for the Switch 2 called “game-key cards.” These cards don’t store the full game like traditional cartridges. Instead, they act as a key that lets you download the game onto your system through the internet.

Unlike the previous “code-in-box” approach, game-key cards offer more flexibility. According to Nintendo’s Tetsuya Sasaki, these cards aren’t tied to a specific account, so you can use them on any Switch 2 system (Thanks, GameSpot). This means you can lend them to friends or family without restrictions, making them feel more like physical copies than digital codes.

While this isn’t a complete return to traditional physical releases, some players may see it as a better alternative. Since the cards don’t lock to a single account, you might even be able to resell them. However, the biggest drawback remains—when Nintendo eventually shuts down the Switch 2 servers, you could lose access to any game that relies on this system.

Nintendo’s customer support page also clarifies how these game-key cards work. Even after downloading and installing a game, you still need to keep the card inserted in the system to play. The first time you use one, you’ll also need an internet connection for verification.

This new approach changes how physical games work on the Switch 2, blending elements of both digital and physical formats. While it offers more flexibility than digital codes, it still comes with some limitations that players will need to consider.SOURCEThe post Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Won’t Be Locked to a Nintendo Account appeared first on COGconnected.
