Four pitchers made some early offense hold up as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat the Syracuse Mets, 5-1, on Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium in New York. Starter Brandon Leibrandt (1-0) went five scoreless inning, allowing three hits with two walks and five strikeouts, to get the win. Relievers Kervin Castro, Colten Brewer and Yerry De Los Santos combined to give up just one hit — a home run to Giberto Celestino — in the final four innings with one walk and five strikeouts.
After being limited to four hits and seven base runners in Wednesday afternoon’s loss to Syracuse, the RailRiders (3-3) jumped on Mets starter Blade Tidwell for three runs in the top of the first. With one out, Jorbit Vivas walked and T.J.
Rumfield was hit by a pitch. Everson Pereira followed with a single to score Vivas and send Rumfield to third. With two outs, Jose Rojas doubled to score Rumfield and Pereira.
Braden Shewmake led off the top of the second with a home run to right-center field to make it 4-0. Celestino’s home run leading off the bottom of the seventh spoiled the shutout bid for the RailRiders. In the top of the eighth, Pereira led off with a walk, stole second, took third on a groundout by Dominic Smith and scored on a fielder’s choice by Rojas.
Ronaldo Hernandez had two of the RailRiders’ five hits. On Friday, the series continues at 6:35 p.m.
