Swamp Foxes capture Lower State golf championship

Ashley Ridge is undefeated going into the Class 5A Division 1 Girls Golf Championship match. The Swamp Foxes left no doubt as to who has the top team in the Lower State, coming in with a team score of 315 Oct. 21 to handily win the division’s Lower State Championship match at Crowfield Golf Club.

That put the Swamp Foxes six points ahead of runner-up Carolina Forest. Trailing in the match were Stratford (362), Cane Bay (368), Sumter (381), Wando (384), West Ashley (388), Spring Valley (418), James Island (443), Summerville (447), Fort Dorchester (452) and Ridge View (481). Wando’s Grace Lindsey was the low medalist for the match with a two-round score of 71.



Junior Annabel Carman led Ashley Ridge, coming in with a score of 76 to place second individually. Just behind were three other Dorchester School District Two golfers. Ashley Ridge junior Sofia Villarose placed third with a score of 77.

In a tie for fourth place, all with a score of 78, were Fort Dorchester junior Marlie Duarte, Carolina Forest senior Savannah Sansom and junior Lexi Wohlers, and Ashley Ridge senior Avery Smith. Rounding out the Top 10 were Cane Bay junior Anna Gressette (79), Carolina Forest junior Minea Kosonen (81) and Stratford senior Braylee Wright (82). Seventh-grader Sloan Price (84) tied for 11th place with Cane Bay freshman Julia Gressette and Carolina Forest freshman Claudia Mediate and senior Lily Fredlake also played for the Swamp Foxes.

Also representing Fort Dorchester were junior Laney Counterm, eighth-grader Jamie Just and juniors Clara Lima and Mila Jiannuzzi. Senior Brinley Taylor (98) led Summerville, placing 24th. Also playing for Summerville were seniors Jocelyn Kozey and Nora Blackwell, junior Liberty Kirk and freshman Maysie Runyon.

The top teams and individuals not on a qualifying team from both the Upper State and Lower State championship matches advanced to compete in the division’s state-championship match Oct. 30 at Columbia Country Club. Results from that match were not available at press time.
