Suspect who fatally shot woman in Southeast Portland turns himself in

PORTLAND, Ore. — The man accused of shooting and killing a woman Tuesday morning, triggering a shelter-in-place order in a Portland neighborhood, has turned himself in, police said. On Thursday, the 18-year-old suspect, Kamari N.

Gates, turned himself in and was arrested on an outstanding warrant for murder. He was then transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon. The woman who was shot and killed has been identified as 38-year-old LaToya M.



Hill of Portland; her family is requesting privacy at this time. The medical examiner said Thursday that Hill died of homicide by gunshot wound. On Sept.

17, around 8:37 a.m., police officers found Hill with gunshot wounds in the area of Southeast 136th Avenue and Southeast Knight Street.

She was taken to a hospital, where she later died. A shelter-in-place order was issued to residents in the immediate area as the East Metro SWAT team, comprised of Multnomah County Sheriff's Office personnel and Gresham police searched the area. That evening, the shelter-in-place warning was lifted, but the suspect was not found.
