A Post-Courier reporter, at the Rabaul police station witnessed the suspect brought in to the station and described a heated scene involving the families of the suspect and the two deceased.
“It was a confrontation between the three groups,” said the reporter. “The families that fronted up the station were heavily armed with bush knives and spears.” According to our reporter, families of the deceased chanted: “Salim em kam outside na ba mipla kilim em,” and “Salim em kam outside na stretim rong blong em.
” In fear of Davai’s safety, police swifty moved him to the Kokopo police cells. The reporter confirmed that the families remained at the Rabaul police station until 8pm when they were finally dispersed by police. In a case that has shocked the model province, relevant authorities have remained tight-lipped.
Attempts to confirm the charges with the ENB Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Superintendent Felix Nebanat and ACP NGI Naua Vanuawaru have been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, a reliable source revealed to this paper gripping details of events that unfolded on the fateful night of Friday, October 11. At around 9pm, the suspect and four other youths, went to a location (disclosed) at Karavi where they rested for a few hours.
At some point before midnight, two of the youths managed to escape, leaving the other two behind. The source said that the two suffered an hour-long ordeal of brutal torture before they were eventually slashed to death. Ward member for Karavi, Valvalu Bualten, fearing that the killings would implicate the youth from his ward, told the Post-Courier there is no involvement.
“Rumours going around on Facebook, it does not involve the boys from Karavi. “The two deceased, one is from Ramale village, and the other is from Ratavul village, both from Rabaul district.” Mr Bualten said that on Sunday, October 13, he had apologised to the families of the deceased on behalf of his Karavi people.
