KINGSTON, Jamaica — Self-published author and publicist Susan Smith has released her third book with hopes that it will be an inspiration to children. “I am hoping I can get it into as many schools as possible, as many children as possible. Plus, I wouldn’t mind it if it becomes a best seller,” Smith told Observer Online.
The book titled When I Grow Up was published on June 14. Smith’s toddler Kayra-Rose Alman is credited as co-author while Janet Smith was the editor. It is currently available on Amazon while physical copies will be available at major bookstores across the island in the coming weeks.
Smith explained that she intended to publish three books for Child’s Month, however, there were some delays. She was encouraged to put pen to paper because of a conversation she had with her daughter. “One day, she told me she wanted to be a chef and I was so impressed that my three-year-old was already choosing a career.
Mind you, she might not end up being a chef, but I think it is important to get them thinking about it. I told her she can be anything she wanted to be and that is how the book started. She actually helped to pick the professions,” the author said.
Smith has previously published Hey Black Boy and Little Black Girl . Smith is the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of West Indies, Mona. She is inspired by authors Edith Blyton, Toni Morrison, Kamau Brathwaite, and Derek Walcott.
