A supermarket that's worked out cheaper than Aldi and Lidl over the last few weeks is now among the most expensive after a huge price hike. Over the last three weeks both Morrisons and Asda have been cheaper than the budget retailers for a basket of essentials, including bread, butter and milk. And while Asda is now working out cheapest of the lot, Morrisons is now second most expensive following two big price hikes.
Since last week, it's chicken breasts have risen by 13% and its coffee by 16%, with a 100g jar of Savers coffee up from 99p to £1.15. It means that the £2.

Under that offer, the meat was the cheapest of all the retailers. There is now a different More Card offer on larger packs of chicken and other meats, of three for £10. With Morrisons, at £12.
93, now second most expensive retailer behind Tesco (£13.22) for the basket - which also includes mince, tea bags and beans - it means Asda has taken the lead, with a bill of £12.50.
It's a far cry from last year when it spent much of the time as the most expensive supermarket and was criticised for its high prices. Aldi, which has put its mince up from £2.49 to £2.
59 since last week, is second cheapest, with a bill of £12.66, and Lidl, which has hiked two prices this week - chicken from £2.25 to £2.
29 and mince from £2.49 to £2.69 - is in third place, with a bill of £12.
77. Sainsbury's, which this week announced its cutting 3,000 jobs and closing its store-run cafes , including three in Greater Manchester, is joint second most expensive with Morrisons, with the same bill of £12.93.

When it comes to meat however, our comparison includes the cheapest packs of mince from each place and at Aldi and Lidl, along with Morrisons, it's a 25% fat pack, whereas the others sell 20% fat, which is seen as better quality. An Aldi spokesperson said: "Our promise to customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we’ve been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for three years running.
Which? has also named Aldi the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket every month in 2024." Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and does not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
