Despite conceding two goals to France in a friendly match played on Saturday at the Stade Raymond Kopa, Angers, the Nigerian Super Falcons displayed grit and exceptional sportsmanship. Ifeoma Onumonu, one of the Falcons, scored in added time (45’+3) with the aid of an assist by Gift Monday. Onumonu’s goal ended Nigeria’s 13-year zero-goal streak with France.

The female national football team also experienced some setbacks. In the 72nd and 87th minutes, Nnadozie, the team’s goalkeeper, sustained injuries. This caused the team some delays and affected their performance in the game.



France substituted some players during Saturday’s match including Sakina Karchaoui, Naomie Feller and Jade Le Guilly. Joe Echegini and Christy Ucheibe received yellow cards for unsportsmanlike conduct and were cautioned for a foul in the 66th and 63rd minute, respectively.

The Super Falcons had previously conceded 10 goals without scoring in their past three encounters with France. Scoring a goal in this game with France showed a remarkable improvement. Nigerians are hopeful that the Super Falcons will consolidate on this improvement and become a more formidable group ahead of the Women’s African Cup of Nations which will be hosted in 2025 by Morocco.
