Sunny Deol, Bollywood star, joined BJP in 2019, won Gurdaspur seat, quit politics in 2023. At Rising Bharat Summit 2025, he revealed his role as Hanuman in Ramayana. Sunny Deol, Bollywood’s action star known for his patriotic roles, ventured into politics in 2019 by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He contested from the Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab and won with a significant margin. In August 2023, Deol announced he would not seek re-election, citing that he was not suited for politics and wished to focus on his acting career. At the Rising Bharat Summit 2025, when asked whether he would consider representing Punjab again in politics, Sunny Deol said in Punjabi that wherever he is, he’s fighting for the country as a whole.

He emphasized that Punjab will always be home, and he will always return to it. Reflecting on his identity as an actor, he said actors are blessed because they belong to the whole world and receive love from every corner. It’s the audience’s affection, he added, that has brought him to where he is today—the characters he played resonated with people and found a place in their hearts.

He also noted that 99% of audiences watch films for relief—they know it’s not real, but for that moment, they want to believe in the world they’re seeing and feel the thrill it brings. When asked if he would like to return to Punjab, Sunny Deol shared that he has visited many times even after stepping away from politics. He said, “Mera dil aur dimaag Punjab mein hai" — expressing how deeply rooted he feels in the state.

He recalled being brought up there between 1962 and 1980, and added that those years shaped who he is today. But when he visits now and can’t find the simplicity of that time, he admits it leaves him feeling sad. During the session, the Bollywood superstar also revealed to CNN-News18 exclusively that he is indeed playing the role of Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s directorial Ramayana.

The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram..
