Sunderland City Council's planning department has given the thumbs up to plans for improved facilities at Houghton Rugby Club. The club, located off Dairy Lane in the Houghton ward, had submitted an application earlier this year seeking permission for a single-storey extension to the rear of the existing clubhouse. The proposed extension, featuring four high-level windows, three doors and an "open gable roof design", is intended to provide "additional changing facilities for two female teams and officials".
Additionally, the plan includes creating four more parking spaces. During the council's consultation on the plans, no objections were raised by the public. After assessing the application against planning policies, the council approved it on December 13, 2024.
In their decision report, council planners deemed the plans acceptable and "wholly ancillary to the existing use", adding that they would not introduce a "not considered to introduce a visually obtrusive addition to the street scene". The council's highways department also had no objections regarding highway safety or parking. The proposed single-storey rear extension at the rugby club is not expected to cause any significant issues in terms of outlook, dominance, overshadowing, loss of sunlight/daylight or privacy.
The planning conditions stipulate that the works must be completed within a three-year timeframe.
