Shameful vouchers

The General Assembly is ready to fund more school vouchers for a total of $463.5 million of our tax money going to families with no economic need. The range for each family will be from $3,360 to $7,468 per child.

To be clear, this is for children enrolled in private schools by Oct. 1. No additional teacher raises are included in this bill, which will be voted on this week.

Do you really want your tax dollars to be spent in this manner? Please contact your representatives this weekend and when they pass this vote them out next month! Patti Gillenwater Winston-Salem I’m a 67-year-old white male. People are also reading..

. One of my hobbies is restoring old British sports cars. I have been doing this since 1998.

Many times I’ve had to pull off on a side road to check this thing or that thing. (You might think that’s annoying, but we enthusiasts enjoy the process.) Whenever I pulled to the side invariably someone would stop and ask, “Do you need any help?” Tonight I pulled off to check my idle.

A truck went past and then backed up. An older white man was driving it. His first question wasn’t, “Do you need any help?” No, his first question was: “Are you looking for anybody? This is a private road.

” (There was no sign and no gate, just a road to the left.) I told him that I wasn’t looking for anyone, I was just checking my idle and that I had to go because everybody gets shot these days. And I turned around and left.

Where have compassion and civility gone? Joe Vincoli Clemmons Thursday’s traffic crash on Salem Parkway, however unfortunate, has brought to light an ongoing bit of confusion about U.S. Highway 421 which needs to be clarified in the interest of the motoring public.

A quick look at a map shows us that Highway 421 runs from our coast to the Tennessee line. However, for whatever unknown reason (to me, at least), it was long ago designated a U.S.

highway, and thus made North and South U.S. 421.

Many folks refer to it as east and west, understandably, but it is of some importance to recognize the legal designation to avoid even further confusion. Today’s report used north/south and east/west in the same paragraph. I don’t see how (or why) we would call the same lanes of concrete Salem Parkway east/west, and Hwy 421 north/south.

Katherine Gambill King I support Amy Taylor North for N.C. House in District 74.

Amy has lived, worked and raised her two sons in our community. Her campaign motto is “Do More Good” and that is exactly how she lives her life. She has been an active volunteer in our public schools for many years and has volunteered at Dress for Success as well as other local organizations.

For the past year, Amy has been touring and listening to voters in multiple businesses and churches. Her goal has been to find out what is most important to our community so she can best serve us. Amy knows that people want strong, fully funded public schools, protection of their personal freedoms, safe communities, a clean environment, economic growth and upward mobility.

Amy will work tirelessly for these and other issues. More importantly, Amy will continue to listen to her constituents. Amy will continue to Do More Good.

Join me and vote for Amy Taylor North. Linda Arrigo Clemmons Cal Thomas’ Sept. 5 column references CNN’s interview with Kamala Harris (“The Harris-Walz interview: What we heard and saw”).

Mr. Thomas writes: “Bash let Harris get away with not answering the big question. Was she part of a cover-up about Biden’s mental decline?” I would pose a question to Mr.

Thomas: Who has been a part of the cover-up of Trump’s mental decline? At least one party has had the courage to address the problem at the very top of its leadership. Why can’t the Republicans do the same? As an unaffiliated voter, one of the reasons I can’t vote for Trump is his apparent diminished cognitive ability. Quite often he can’t string together multiple coherent sentences.
