ASTON — Up-and-coming Oxford may one day overtake Sun Valley at the top of the Ches-Mont League American Division, but the Hornets will have to wait another year for that chance. The Hornets, seeking their first league/division title since 2004, could not match the Vanguards’ intensity, Wednesday night, resulting in a 40-32 loss. The win clinched the sixth-straight American Division crown for Sun Valley, who set the pace right from the get-go with dominant technical falls from Josh Deorio (107 pounds) and Jacob Carr (114).
“Josh is a big part of the tone we have on this team, overall,” Sun Valley coach BJ Barlow said. “He’s just way undersized, but he showed toughness and he performed on a big stage. They’re 100 percent Sun Valley, just all about the team and all about the win.
” Deorio scored a late takedown in the first period against Kevin Hernandez, and despite giving up size, the freshman scored 12 near-fall points in the second to clinch the tech. Carr, who bumped up, also scored 12 back points against Oxford’s Caleb Swain. Sam Howell (121) got the Hornets (3-1 division, 14-4 overall) on the board, but couldn’t score bonus in the lone decision of the night.
Sun Valley (4-0, 15-3) then got pins from John Deorio (127) and Brecken Strickland (133), taking advantage of the absence of Oxford’s Dylan Heffner, who was sick. “It’s a combination of our guys throughout the lineup,” Sun Valley senior, Brandon Carr said. “Starting from the bottom at 107, just going out there and dominating on top and getting tech falls, it just feels good to watch those guys go all out, compete and dominate.
” Oxford’s Jordan Schaible (139) and Jared Schaible (145) cut the Vanguard lead to eight with a fall and tech, respectively. The Hornets were also missing Aiden Edison (215), and tried to juggle the second half of the lineup, bumping Jon Smith (172) and Blake Hostetter (189) a weight each. Sun Valley got quick pins from Hunter Delaney (152) and Will Cadden (160), though, all but eliminating Oxford’s margin for error.
“We had a couple guys out of our lineup, so we had some other guys step up,” Oxford coach Tony Fabri said. “We just fell a little bit short, but it was a good experience for them. (Sun Valley) was the better team.
” Down 20 with four to go, Smith and Hostetter registered falls, but Sun Valley had its closer waiting at 215. Brandon Carr stepped in and slammed the door shut with a first-period pin. “Six times is a nice thing to hear,” Brandon Carr said.
“Just thinking about all the guys that came before me and are going to come after to continue that. At the end of the day, that’s not our goal. We want to get a district title and we want to make it to states and we want to send guys to Hershey.
” That’s next up for both squads. Seventh-seeded Sun Valley will face No. 2 Boyertown Saturday at 8 a.
m., in the quarterfinals of the District 1-3A Duals at Upper Dublin. The Vanguards need to win two duals before they lose two to qualify for their first-ever PIAA Duals.
“We had a couple losses earlier in the year and I think we were getting a little too ahead of ourselves and getting a little too cocky,” Brandon Carr said. “I don’t think that’s who we are. I think we’re a much better team than that and a much more physical team than that.
We’re going to keep pushing through and we’re going to shock a lot of people this weekend.” Oxford is seeded higher than Sun Valley, at No. 5, and will face No.
4 Council Rock North in the quarters. Fabri’s hoping to be full strength for what should be a competitive dual, and he’s counting on Wednesday’s loss to be a spark. “Some of these guys had matches they thought were closer than they should’ve been, or matches they lost that they thought they should have won,” Fabri said.
“That should light a fire under them.” Sun Valley 40, Oxford 32 107 — Josh Deorio (SV) tech. fall Hernandez, 15-0 (5-0) 114 — J.
