Suffolk County Council will install 6,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charge points. Set to begin in the summer of 2025, the charge points will be installed on residential streets and in public car parks. A survey last year led residents to suggest some of the locations.
The initiative is part of a partnership with operator Believ. The council's successful £5.3million bid to the government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund, along with an additional £16million from Believ, made the project possible.
Councillor Philip Fairclough-Mutton, the county council's cabinet member for environment, communitie, and equality, said: "25% of Suffolk households don't have a driveway and park on their street. "This is a significant barrier for people who would like an EV, as they have no convenient way to charge. "We are providing a solution by installing charge points on their street, or very nearby.
" Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ, said: "We're delighted to have been awarded the opportunity to roll out such a significant number of charge points across Suffolk. "It will make a real difference to local EV drivers.".
