TENNIS: TEAM PNG represented by 13 players at the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships in Fiji returned over the weekend following a successful campaign. The Championships was from April 1-12, and the team did well enough to secure an impressive third overall position as the best-performing nation. Team PNG finished third in top three countries with overall points, and PNG represented the West Pacific Region which was crowned the winning region.
West Pacific finished in first place, followed by East Pacific in second place, and North Pacific in third place. West Pacific Team won the event – for the first time after a decade long-drought without wins, grateful for our team to be part of that. The West Pacific countries include, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Island, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and New Caledonia.
Coach Eddie Mera said that this was the best team put together to compete, “this was by far the best team PNG Tennis has sent to West Pacific in January which have qualified for the POJC and did really well. As a coach seeing the kids have fun on court and enjoying the experience of playing top juniors in the pacific is all we can ask of them, to get a win is an added bonus for the team. All their efforts in training have paid off and the results show that.
