Matthew Smith-trained Subartic made Sunday's return to the same track a memorable one, claiming the Cessnock Cup (1850 metres).
"Early days we weren't so sure with him," stable representative Paul Rowe told host broadcaster Sky Racing. "But a trip down to Melbourne ..
. and now he's racing a lot more consistent." Subartic, out of barrier four, was involved in a battle down the home straight before getting in front with around 100m remaining.
The next five horses finished within a length of the winner - Outcast Girl and Kris Lees prepared Bestower rounding out the placings. Rowe praise the ride of jockey Ash Morgan in the benchmark 68 handicap, rating it "10 out of 10". "Ash gave him a perfect ride," he said.
"He was confident out of the gates but then he knew the two who were going to lead up the race were going to control the race. "Just popped off the fence, see him at the 600m, just to let him build through his gears without taking off on him. "Then moved at the right time .
.. 10 out of 10 ride.
" It was the last event of Newcastle's eight-race program on Sunday. Scone-trained Crop Duster, prepared by Jeremy Gask, took out the sixth following on from a Jungle Juice Cup title at the same track on October 19. The five-year-old gelding, ridden by apprentice jockey Mitch Stapleford, settled midfield from barrier eight in the benchmark 64 handicap (1400m) and slowly pushed forward around the outside.
By the top of the last turn favourite Crop Duster was four wide with a clear run and eventually got the job done by half a length. Lees and experienced hoop Andrew Gibbons opened proceedings by saluting with Cutepi. Brad Widdup and Zac Wadick produced a trainer-jockey double with back-to-back success via Rose's Legacy and Hyperbolic.
