Several studies have shown a noticeable spike in the number of kidney stone cases during the summer months. Know if you are at risk too?

Kidney stones are a common urological problem that affects millions of people worldwide. Interestingly, several studies have shown a noticeable spike in the number of kidney stone cases during the summer months. This seasonal variation is primarily attributed to changes in hydration levels, dietary patterns, and overall lifestyle during hotter weather.

Times Now Digital spoke to Dr. Ch. Mahesh Babu, Consultant Urologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, about the same.

He explained, "Dehydration is the leading cause of kidney stone formation in summer. High temperatures lead to increased sweating, which causes the body to lose more fluids. Without adequate hydration, urine becomes concentrated with minerals like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid — the primary components of kidney stones.

Concentrated urine facilitates crystal formation, which can eventually develop into stones." In addition to dehydration, dietary habits also play a role. People tend to consume more salty snacks, sugary beverages, and oxalate-rich foods like iced tea, spinach, and nuts during summer outings and vacations.

These dietary factors can further increase the risk of stone formation. Dr. Ch.

Mahesh says, "Physical activity in hot weather, particularly without proper fluid intake, exacerbates the problem. Athletes and outdoor workers are especially at risk due to continuous fluid loss and insufficient replacement." How To Stay Protected? To prevent kidney stones during summer, it is crucial to maintain proper hydration.

Drinking at least 2.5 to 3 liters of water per day can help dilute the urine and reduce stone-forming tendencies. Consuming citrus fruits and juices like lemon and orange can also help, as citrate in these fruits prevents stone formation.

In conclusion, the increase in kidney stone cases during summer is closely linked to dehydration, dietary patterns, and lifestyle habits. By staying hydrated and mindful of one’s diet, the risk of developing kidney stones can be significantly reduced during the hotter months.
