The play is a comedy in which three shepherds have to track down one of their lambs that has been stolen. They find it hidden in a cradle and disguised as a baby in the home of a sheep-stealing couple. As the adventure continues, the play switches to the familiar nativity story of the shepherds being told of the birth of Christ.
The Second Shepherd's Play was first performed in medieval times with the performance in Redditch set to last 15 minutes. David Allen, project director for MAT, said: "Redditch town centre was probably a market place in medieval times. "We wanted to create an event that would celebrate the town's medieval origins and also be suitable for Christmas.
" The play will be performed three times in Market Square outside the Central Library between 1pm and 3pm today (Wednesday, December 11). The performances are free with the project being funded by a ReNew grant from Bromsgrove District Council and Redditch Borough Council..
