By VELERIE BULUMARIS Three students from Umi Vocational Training Centre have completed their six-weeks training on Friday at Leron Farm in Morobe. The students received intensive agricultural training about essential farming skills, including the proper handling of basic farm tools, nursery operations and the rearing of ducks and native chickens. They gained hands-on experience from the Philip Rebura Ralda Foundation Inc.
trainers who facilitated the three on-the-job training students under its Development Training Hub program that collaborate youths to learn agricultural skills on site. The program also provided the students with a weekly allowance to support their field training and living expenses during their stay at the Leron Agro-venture Ltd. farm in Huon Gulf District.
An OJT student Squbert Yaimas said he has acquired lot of hands-on skills about agriculture from the training during the program, “it’s a privilege for me to be accepted in to this program because now I can do seedling transplanting, look after my nursery and even feeding my poultry livestock on my own,” he said. PRRFI’s Acting Admin Officer Evelyn Dau said the training program is a testament to the foundation’s commitment to foster agricultural skills development in the region. “We believe that investing in the next generation of farmers is crucial for the sustainable growth of our agricultural sector,” she said.
Ms Dau said that PRRF plans to further support similar initiatives to equip young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the agriculture industry. This partnership with UVETC and Leron Agroventure Ltd under PRRFI exemplifies the importance of collaboration between private sector entities and non-profit organisations in empowering local communities,” she said. Ms Dau said the foundation encourage further collaboration in supporting agricultural education and development in the region especially in the technical institutions, local government authorities, farm enterprises, and funding organisations.
