Surat: Student organizations have begun protests demanding an inquiry into the suicide of a Class 8 student and action against the school concerned, as she was allegedly harassed by the school over fees due. On Friday, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) held a protest at the office of the district education officer (DEO), while on Saturday, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest at Aadarsh Public School, demanding to meet the school administrators. A 16-year-old girl hanged herself on Jan 20.

Her family alleged that she was being harassed over unpaid fees by the school, due to which she had stopped going to school. The NSUI demanded that the school be blacklisted. "We are demanding strict action against the school and the officials responsible.

We are also demanding that the education department officials who gave permission to this school be identified, and action be taken against them," said Dhirendra Solanki, president of the Surat city unit of the NSUI. DEO Bhagirathsinh Parmar formed an inquiry committee to probe the allegations made by the family. The committee submitted a report to the education department, based on which further action will be taken.

On Saturday, ABVP workers held a dharna at the school in Godadara. "We went to the school to meet school officials, but we were not allowed inside. Later, police detained us while we were doing a peaceful dharna and took us to the police headquarters," said Manoj Jain, president of the Surat city unit of the ABVP.

Earlier, ABVP submitted a memorandum to the DEO, demanding a detailed inquiry. "We are demanding that a proper inquiry into the claims of the parents and the school be carried out. The school is claiming that the girl ended her life due to some other reason," Jain added.

Police are investigating the suicide and statements from family and school officials are being collected..
