Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 developer Treyarch has been forced to reverse its decision to remove legacy XP tokens from the game following a very heavy wave of fan backlash and criticism. Upon the launch of Season 1 on Thursday, players noticed the Black Ops 6 multiplayer menu screen had been updated to let them use the XP tokens they'd accrued from their time in Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone . This was presumed to be intentional, but 24 hours later, they were gone.
Following a playlist update, Treyarch said it had "fixed an issue that incorrectly allowed legacy XP tokens to be activated in the Black Ops 6 UI". These legacy XP tokens are the exact same as the ones you can earn from the new Battle Pass in Black Ops 6, and they double the amount of XP you gain, weapon level XP, or Battle Pass progress depending on which one you activate in 15, 30, 45, and 60-minute increments. They let you level up faster, earn better attachments quicker, and unlock new cosmetics sooner, so they have a strong use case within the game.
Due to the sudden removal, Treyarch has been hit with a strong wave of criticism that has led to a lot of the goodwill built up by their surprise inclusion being lost. One day later, the studio has reversed its decision and is now working on a way to bring them back "correctly". In a post to Twitter , it was claimed the legacy XP tokens appearing in Black Ops 6 was a "UI bug" and "introduced some potential risk to game stability".
No issues were reported by players as they activated the legacy XP tokens and played on the new Season 1 maps. Still, the developer is now "currently testing a way to implement" legacy XP tokens into the game properly. Until that update goes live, there's actually still a way of activating legacy XP tokens for use in Black Ops 6.
If you load up Warzone, activate the XP tokens you have, then return to Black Ops 6 multiplayer, you'll still receive those XP bonuses for however long they remain active. What do you make of this situation? Share your thoughts in the comments below..
