They have charged him with three counts of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, possessing an unregistered firearm in a public place, possessing a shortened firearm (not a pistol) without authority, acquiring a firearm subject to a prohibition order and using a prohibited weapon contrary to an order. The man remains in custody and is due to face Wagga Court on Saturday October 19.

His detention follows officers sighting him at about 8.30pm on a street in Lavington on Wednesday and attempting to stop him, after reports of a domestic violence incident. Police allege he brandished a gun and pointed it at officers before running towards Woomera Crescent where he directed it at two others who were patrolling nearby.

The man then forced his way into a home on Wagga Road, after allegedly pointing the firearm at another officer. An occupant in the home, a stranger to the man, fled the property uninjured. A siege then unfolded with the man unwilling to leave the house as police negotiators and specialist tactical operations officers were brought in.

Later that night the man left the house without incident and was treated at the scene by paramedics for a back injury, before being transported to Albury hospital. Police allege they found an unloaded sawn-off rifle and a knife inside the home, which were seized for forensic testing. DAILY Today's top stories curated by our news team.
