Ludhaina: A woman sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a stray dog in Nai Abadi, Khanna, in the latest incident highlighting the growing menace of stray animals in the region. The victim, identified as Sheetal, said she was walking through a street when the dog suddenly lunged at her. Despite her attempts to fend it off, the animal bit her multiple times, causing her to fall to the ground.

Rajesh Kumar, a local resident, rushed to the scene after hearing Sheetal's screams. "I was inside my house when I heard a woman crying for help. I ran outside and saw the dog attacking her.

I immediately chased it away," he said. Sheetal was later taken to the civil hospital for treatment. Residents have urged authorities to take immediate steps to address the growing issue of stray dog attacks in the area.

The incident comes just days after a tragic attack in which a 10-year-old boy, Sanjeev Kumar, was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at Mohi village near Ludhiana on March 24. Sanjeev, who was visiting his grandparents from Bihar, had been playing near a wheat field while his relatives worked nearby when the dogs attacked. His grandfather, Shankar Shah, recounted that farmers raised the alarm upon seeing the child being dragged by the pack.

A relative, Veerje Shah, attempted to intervene but was also chased away. By the time villagers managed to rescue Sanjeev, he had suffered severe injuries and succumbed on the way to the hospital. Sanjeev, who had lost his father Mukesh Shah some time ago, was living with his mother, Kishnavati Devi, in Bihar.

His family buried him at a cremation ground in Mohi village. Local police confirmed the attack, with Sub-Inspector Jaswinder Singh from Sudhar police station stating that an investigation was underway. "We are looking into the circumstances of the child's death," he said.

On Jan 11, an 11-year-old boy, Harsukhpreet Singh, was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at the Hasanapur village of Punjab's Ludhiana district. A few days ago, a 10-year-old boy, Arjun, was killed in the same manner at that village. Harsukhpreet was the only son of his parents.

The recent canine attacks have reignited concerns over the rising population of stray dogs in Punjab's rural areas, where similar fatal attacks have been reported in the past. Residents are urging authorities to take swift action to prevent further tragedies.
