Nothing is better than biting into a ruby red strawberry, but keeping them fresh tends to be difficult as most people are storing them wrong. Strawberries should never be kept in their original packaging from the supermarket as the plastic creates a very humid environment, which can attract mould and bacteria. This can cause strawberries to only last a few days, but Jillian Wade, the founder of Food, Folks and Fun , has shared there is a simple way to keep them fresh for three weeks longer.
Jillian decided to try out every storage method she had found on social media and after a few weeks she discovered that storing strawberries in a jar is the best way to keep them fresh. Jillian said: “I stored unwashed strawberries using the Glass Jar Method. This is where unwashed strawberries are kept in an air-tight glass canning jar” She added: “The glass jar method is the clear winner.
Strawberries that last three weeks in the refrigerator are a total win!” Strawberries contain a lot of water and the key to storing them properly is to try and remove as much excess moisture from their environment as possible. A glass jar with a lid is airtight which keeps the strawberries dry and also helps acts as a protective barrier against bacteria which will keep them fresh. Fruit also tends to ripen quickly if its temperature changes but glass can keep a cool consistent temperature which will other stop strawberries from becoming mushy or spoiled.
All you need to do is place your strawberries in a large glass mason jar and screw on the lid. Do not wash the strawberries before storing them as it can cause mould and do not remove the stems as they protect the fruit from becoming bruised. If you can, line the bottom of the jar with a little bit of paper towel before adding your strawberries.
The paper towel will absorb any moisture coming from the strawberries to help keep them fresh. Then, simply place the jar of strawberries at the back of your fridge on a shelf. Keep an eye on them and remove any strawberries that seem to be ripening quickly.
Your strawberries will still be juicy, plump and taste amazing for up to three weeks so you can enjoy them for much longer..
