Anyone with brown sugar in their cupboards could stop it from going rock solid with one unusual addition.

A cleaning and home hacks guru has shared her go-to method for making sure her baking ingredients don’t go stale. Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok , revealed some of her favourite food storage hacks for making her food last longer. Among the collection was an innovative and cost-effective method for preventing brown sugar from hardening.

Luckily, all you need is one sweet treat to do so. In a recent video, Chantel explained that she uses a large marshmallow for preventing any unwanted lumps in her brown sugar. Simply place a large marshmallow in the brown sugar bag or tub.

The idea is that marshmallows will help prevent brown sugar from hardening by absorbing any moisture. It will then gradually release the moisture back into the sugar, effectively rehydrating it. Marshmallows are a good source of moisture due to being made with ingredients such as gelatin, sugar, starch and water.

Releasing moisture will keep the sugar crystals hydrated, preventing them from drying out. When sugar crystals dry out, they harden into lumps. To prevent sugar from drying out, you can place it in an airtight container immediately to extend its shelf life.

Molasses is added to brown sugar, which infuses it with moisture. Air will turn brown sugar stale as the moisture from the molasses starts to evaporate, explained Chowhound. Experts at The Kitchn also recommended storing brown sugar in a sealed bag in the freezer, which can help lock in moisture.

When coming to use it, allow it to come to room temperature at least 15 minutes before..
