The Paramount Ruler of the Mwaghavul ethnic nationality in Plateau State, His Royal Highness John Putmang Hirse, has urged youths to desist from the abuse of social media. The monarch expressed concerns over the increasing rate of social media abuse among youths, noting that the platforms meant for communication, education, and development have been hijacked for spreading hate speech, fake news, and insults. Speaking on Wednesday during a ceremony to present the newly elected National Executive members of the Mwaghavul Development Association at his palace in Mangu, the monarch emphasised the need for youths to be mindful of their online activities.
“I am worried about the way some of our youths are using social media. There are a lot of insults. When you see certain posts, you wonder whether they see any reasons for such at all.
They don’t care whether it will affect the image of the Mwaghavul people or the image of the society. These are some of the issues the new exco should look into. “We are doing our best to see that we live in peace with one another and some people somewhere are trying to destroy our image through social media.
I think we need to caution the youths. Next time we see such things on social media, we will address it squarely,” the monarch pointed out. He charged the new executives of the Mwaghavul Development Association to prioritise the development of their land and promote unity among their people.
