STONEWALL, La. – Stonewall voters have said yes to alcohol sales. At least 60-plus percent of the votes cast Saturday were in favor of all forms of alcohol sales, whether it be in a restaurant, convenience store or a bar.

The outcome is in contrast to a vote 10 years ago when the same propositions were defeated. Last year, Stonewall resident Angelo Deprimo started a petition to have another election. It took two attempts, but he and supporters were successful in getting enough signatures to force the Town Council to call the election.

Still, the issue evoked strong feelings on both sides. Proponents said alcohol sales will be a needed revenue source for the town that does not have its own tax base. Opponents didn’t want the change many felt would come with alcohol-related businesses.

Sales won’t be automatic, though. The Town Council first will have to put ordinances in place governing the now-approved sales..
