Steven Gerrard says he hopes Mohamed Salah ignores the Saudi Pro League's advances and stays at Liverpool beyond next year. Salah's contract expires at the end of the season and there's yet to be any indication he'll be extending his stay on Merseyside. The cash-rich Saudis have been trying to court him over the last couple of years as their next marquee signing.

While he'll be turning 33 next June, he's showing no signs of slowing down. He already has 14 goal contributions in 12 games across all competitions this season ahead of today's Premier League clash with Arsenal . No Liverpool fan will be hoping he walks away on a free transfer in the summer window.

And that includes former captain Gerrard, despite his obvious links to the Pro League as manager of Al-Ettifaq. Appearing on The Redmen TV podcast, he said: "I hope we still get another couple of years out of Mo Salah. I think he can deliver for many more years because of his shape, his professionalism.

"So I hope he stays. I hope we get more out of him, but I’m not surprised because the ones that are obsessed of the profession and they’ve got that level of talent, it’s no surprise that the consistent levels are there all the time.” Gerrard also offered some hope to the Reds faithful that Salah will be staying via his goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, who only left Liverpool in the summer after 15 years with the club and therefore knows the Egyptian King better than most.

“I always pick John’s brain and what would he like on a database," Gerrard added. "John says he’s really obsessed to be the best, and he wants to break records. He wants to be remembered as the best.

“So I’m not surprised in terms of how he approaches his profession. And I think he’s going to be one of these players that we’ll all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes when he moves on." Salah currently sits fifth in Liverpool's all-time top scorer list on 218, with Billy Liddell (228), Gordon Hodgson (241), Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346) ahead of him.

He's also ninth in Premier League history, only 25 behind Andy Cole in fourth. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
